Owner Pleads Guilty in Explosion
written by ENR Staff 09/26/2007
Pipeline owner Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Houston, pleaded no contest to six felony charges and agreed to pay a $15-million settlement related to a 2004 gasoline pipeline explosion in Walnut Creek, Calif., that killed five workers. “Although others made mistakes, they were primarily responsible for the safety of the pipeline,” says Lon Wixon, a prosecutor with the Contra Costa County district attorney’s office. After an excavation contractor punctured the line, gasoline under pressure soaked welders and their torch sparks ignited a fireball.
